The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
Honeybee Copper Necklace
My former landlord gave me a copy of The Secret Life of Bees. She had just finished reading it and couldn’t bear to put it back on her shelf without sharing it with someone. It’s a sweet tale about a motherless white girl named Lily who is taken in by three black women: beekeepers named May, June and August. Lily learns about bees, life, and what maternal love really means.
The honeybee necklace, made of copper, amber, and glass, was not only inspired by the book, but also by my grandfather who always kept bees. He passed away almost 20 years ago, but left behind a secret. Recently, while my dad was cleaning out the basement, he found an entire case of my grandfather’s honey. Deep amber, darkly sweet, still as good as the day he canned it. Maybe even better.
